You may be stuck in a job where you don’t feel you are using the skills you have, however don’t let this job go to waste. There are ways for you to make the most of an uninspiring job. Stick it out, the experience you gain and contacts you will make will ultimately pay off in helping to get you your dream job.


Be professional - However uninspired and de motivated you are feeling, always act as if it’s your first day in the job. Be on time, look sharp and take pride in your work. Looking and acting the part will boost your confidence, make your work feel more worthwhile and gain you the respect of your colleagues.


Seek out other tasks that will showcase your talents – Make yourself known to any teams or areas of the business and volunteer your skills to help them with any additional work they might have, especially work that could showcase your talents not currently being used. If you are going to do this it is essential you don’t let your current work load slide.


Don’t lose sight of why you’re in the job – You’re there to gain the experience, skills and contacts that would put you in reach of your next more fulfilling job. By knowing what you don’t like about your role will help you build a picture of what you would like to do. When catching up with your boss, remind them of what you’re interested in and any ask for additional responsibilities they could give you where you feel you could really add value.


Be aware that finding your dream job is a long term goal and that any small steps you can take along the way will help you find career success. All the skills, experience and hard work you put in will only help you identify with others better when you’re in that dream job you always wanted!
