The internet has revolutionalised recruitment. Online job boards are more popular than ever. Large companies are increasingly bringing their recruitment in house and using the internet and social media to attract candidates.

If you don’t know how to work the system you will be left behind.

  1. Research – Have a list of companies, industries or roles you have an interest in
  2. Have your CV ready and be aware of your skills achievements and interests. These can then be adapted for each application you submit
  3. Major job board sites – Businesses and recruitment companies use them and they will help you to not only search and apply for jobs but also get an idea of the types of roles out there and the salaries being paid.
  4. Company websites – search companies you are interested in. They may have a recruitment section that tells you how to apply. If they don’t, phone HR and ask how their recruitment works.
  5. Social media – Jobs are advertised all over the internet not just on the major sites so be creative. Linkedin and facebook are fast becoming a vital tool in recruitment too
  6. Personalise each CV submission with a cover email. Keep it short and to the point introducing yourself and stating why you are interested in the role and what you have to offer
  7. Be selective – Don’t apply for multiple completely different roles within a company or recruitment agency. If you feel you have a broad skillset then apply for the one or two that best suit your experience and discuss others when they contact you
  8. Be organised – Keep a record of each company, contact and role you apply for. You’ll be ready if they call!
  9. Chase – Companies and recruitment agencies are receiving hundreds of applications every day. Be patient but if they haven’t contacted you within a week give them a call.
