When it comes to researching, you really do get out what you put in.


Here are some tips to help you find companies or industries you have an interest in, the type of job you would be qualified for and the salary you could be earning.


  1. Keep your eyes and ears open – Information is all around you so look for anything that attracts your attention and you could do more research on
  2. Talk to people you know – what do they do, what do they enjoy about their jobs?
  3. Search company websites – Look for their values, how they represent themselves and what makes them unique. If you are still interested, then start to research other companies in the same sector
  4. Search engines – There will be thousands of companies out there who are not so well known but would be great to work for so use search engines to identify them
  5. Job sections – Most company websites will have a job section so you can see the types of roles they hire
  6. Someone’s done it for you - You can also use tools such as the times top 100 companies to work for and the fortune 500
  7. LinkedIn, Facebook and twitter. Social media is fast becoming the place to go when job searching. Its  another valuable research tool allowing you to find out useful information about people, companies and industry groups
  8. Keep up with current affairs – You can often be asked about these at interview and will look pretty stupid if you don’t know what’s going on in the world
  9. Potential roles – search on the major job board sites for job descriptions that match what you are interested in doing
  10. Qualifications and training – find out if you need to study further to get the job you really want
  11. What should you get paid – It’s worth researching this area so you know where to position yourself when job hunting. How does the level of experience they’re looking for match to yours and what are they willing to pay for it?
