Are you repelling people – top 3 things to be aware of

Your body language: Being aware of your body language when networking is crucial. Crossing your arms and looking at the floor looks hostile and unfriendly giving the impression you don’t want to talk to people. To establish rapport mirror the other person in word and gesture. Making eye contact and smiling makes others feel welcome. Act confident even if you don’t feel it. Nervous body language (twisting your hair, cracking knuckles and fidgeting) makes other people feel uncomfortable and nervous too.

Check your attitude: Meeting new people and approaching strangers can be a daunting thought. No matter how rubbish you’re day might have been or however much you don’t want to be there you must “show up” in mind as well as body. No one wants to talk to a miserable bore so even if that’s how you’re feeling you need to fake it! Leave your worries at the door take a deep breath, drop your shoulders and go for it!

Stay on the fence: keep your foot out of your mouth by avoiding statements that seem like value judgements. Not everybody will have the same opinions as you about war, politics, religion etc so avoid uncomfortable situations by not making sweeping statements. Instead of saying “Bankers are evil” say “what are your thoughts on the future of banking?” You could be speaking to a bankers wife or worse a banker!
