The 10 things recruiters won’t tell you

With so much competition out there you have to make the right impression the first time you speak to or meet a recruiter. Now more than ever they are under huge pressure to find the right candidates quickly and therefore have to make snap decisions on who is marketable and who’s not.

Here are the top things they won’t tell you but you need to know to give yourself a fighting chance.

1. They’re paid by the client so ultimately their loyalty lies with them

2. The real reason why you’ve been rejected after a CV submission or interview

3. How long you really have to consider a job offer

4. That you have a weak handshake, poor body language or lack of eye contact

5. That you’re not dressed smartly enough, you are too exposed, your shirt/tie combo is horrendous and you need a shower/haircut or shave

6. They don’t think their clients will like you

7. You’re too full of yourself and are likely to embarrass your recruiter

8. You are too vague about what you’re looking for and what you have to offer

9. Who you’re up against for the job or if they’re representing other candidates for the position

10. That you need to be more succinct

Don’t take any of this personally, most job seekers hate recruiters but they are not there to be your personal career coach they are there to do their job of matching the right candidates with the jobs they have available as quickly as possible. If you are aware of this you’ll save a lot of wasted time feeling hurt or angry.
