New job offer, lower salary - what you need to consider


Work out if you can live on the new salary? Can you eat, get to work, and have a life. If you can then consider the following:

 

When you can expect a salary review if you do well? What’s your earning potential, maybe you have to start on less to make more in the future? Is the new job putting you into a completely different sector that you're excited about. If so, passion can often make up for pounds!


Will you feel valued being paid less money? Research the market rate for the role and sector. Some sectors by tradition are not as highly paid as others. Is it a lifestyle choice? does having a good work life balance mean more to you than a high salary.


If you can’t afford to live on the salary being offered, you need to tell them. Express your enthusiasm for taking the job but be honest about your reason. If they can’t raise the salary for you, let them know that you would be interested in any future opportunities they may have where the salary at least matches yours.
