10 key interview preparation techniques

Do you think you are ready for your interview? First impressions really count. Interviewers often make their mind up about you within the first 30 seconds so don’t screw it up through a lack of preparation.

Follow the tips below to help you walk in with confidence:

  1. How are you going to get there? Plan your journey to arrive at least 10 minutes early and have a back up route just in case! It’s a good idea to sit in reception and soak up the environment.
  2. What are you going to wear? Chose your outfit in advance, make sure It’s appropriate for the sector and something you feel good in.
  3. Who are you going to meet? Your interviewers may have a profile on the company website or on Linkedin. They’ve already seen your CV, have a look at theirs!
  4. Research the company. Build an awareness of who they are, what they do and what they stand for
  5. Take 2 copies of your CV with you in case they don’t have it to hand. This is quite common so don’t take it personally. If you have a portfolio, take it with you in case they ask.
  6. Know your own story. Practice talking through your CV until you can do it with confidence. Ums, ahs and rambling are a real turn off for interviewers
  7. Tell me about yourself. Prepare a 2 minute chat about your career so far.
  8. Practice answers to other interview questions such as what are your biggest achievements and why do you want to work here. Make it sound natural and not like a robot.
  9. What makes you right for this job? Read through the job description so you are clear about how your skills and experience relate to what they are looking for.
  10. Make an immediate impact. Practice your eye contact, firm handshake and genuine smile with your friends and family – they will think you are mad but it will help you on the day.
