Art gallery assistant

What is your job?

I work as a gallery assistant in high end commercial art gallery called Halcyon Gallery, which is located in New Bond Street and Harrods.

How did you get into it?

I was very lucky and had a contact who worked in the gallery and he put me forward for the role.

What do you enjoy about it?

I enjoy being surrounded by incredible art work all day and being involved with the selling of such beautiful works. I also have a really great team which makes daily working life very enjoyable!

What do you wish you had known before you entered your industry?

I wish I had known more about the art market. Having done an art history degree I was set up for art of the past as opposed to what is actually going on today in the current market. However, the more time I spend here the more and more I learn, but lack of initial knowledge did pose some problems at first but it encouraged me to go out and learn more. I also wish I had had a better knowledge of Excel, but again this is something I have picked up along the way.

Top tips for someone wanting to start out in your sector

This industry is all about who you know and once you build up a good network of people and put yourself out there you really will go far.
