The secrets to being hired using the hidden jobs market - Part 1

The Hidden Jobs Market - What is it, where is it hidden and why would they hide it from job seekers! In today’s job market more than ever finding a new role requires you to think and act differently. If you stick to the traditional ways of searching for a new job you are destined to compete with everyone else chasing after the same few advertised opportunities. Its estimated that up to 80% of new jobs are never advertised. Many of these jobs are found through networking and companies increasingly offering incentives to their staff to recommend ideal candidates.

Accessing the hidden jobs market is about becoming your own marketing manager. Your main aim is to give your contacts the information they need to market you in their company and with their contacts. Call them, send them an email or best of all, take them out for a coffee.

Whether you are shy or not, It can feel awkward telling people in your network that you’re searching for a new opportunity but if you approach it with a positive and enthusiastic attitude people will be happier and more confident to recommend you as someone who would be great to work with.

When you’re talking with your contacts, don’t just focus on what you are looking for. Show interest in them, their role, the industry, their challenges and how they got into it – people love to talk about themselves and you will become more memorable.

Spend some time preparing a 60 second intro so you don’t feel tongue tied when you’re speaking to your contacts.

‘I’m looking for the next challenge in my career. I want to use my communication and design skills to contribute towards the success and growth of a business. Id ideally be looking for a job in a creative department, perhaps as a design manager or team leader. Some of my ideal target companies are Apple, Google and Microsoft. I was wondering if you might be able to help me find opportunities or an introduction to anyone you think could help.’

Keep track of who you’ve been in touch with so you can follow it up. People are often busy and don’t get round to responding straight away so don’t take this personally. Also the right opportunity might not come up straight away but might be there in a few months time.

Give it a try, accessing the hidden jobs market is easy once you know how.
